2017 Official ASB App Release Party

The balloons popped. The glitter fell. The people shouted.

All the site coordinators lined up with their red shirts and black balloons in hand.

There had been a lot of talk about where ASB was going this year, and with the unexpected string of natural disasters that hit multiple US states and territories, leaving people without food, power, or clean water, it was time for Alternative Spring Break to take leaps in new directions.

The motto for this year’s Alternative Spring Break is “#WeServeEverywhere”. This meant there was no way we could idly sit by and and witness the damage caused by these disasters without offering our assistance.

We had worked tirelessly for all these things to come into place for our App release party so everyone could have a great time for a great cause. The event coordinators did an amazing job to make sure even the smallest details were taken care of.

Excitement took over the room as everyone found out where we were going this year.

Howard student, Beline Francisque says, “It’s nice that Howard understands that we need to go out of our way regardless if they are American or on the mainland. “

Being a student with strong familial ties to the Caribbean, Miss Francisque said she would definitely participate in the trips this year because it made her see that not only can she give back to her family in the Caribbean, but she can also have fun while doing it with her Howard family.

Site coordinator and Steering committee member, Vionna Moore says this transformative year for ASB 2018 has been very challenging because they are starting from scratch, but she’s not backing down from the challenge.

“The app release party was amazing and made me even more excited about ASB as a whole. It was really refreshing to see people so interested in ASB, especially freshmen.”

This year is set to be possibly one of the best as far as the projected impact our Howard students will have on these different areas. We will truly be in the mix of everything, following our motto of In Truth and Service. ASB 2018 is looking to be one of our biggest years in multiple things this year – turnout, positivity, memories, and CHANGE.
